About the Award

The H.M. Ali Family Education Award was originally established by Budget Car & Truck Rental of Calgary in 1998 as an endowment to the Theme School in Northern Planning and Development Studies, at the Arctic Institute of North America.

The purpose of this award is to assist students with an interest in sustainable community development in Canada's northern and arctic regions. It is to help produce well-trained and educated individuals who are sensitive to the needs of northern people and communities and who wish to give service to the north.

Eligibility

To be eligible you must be:

  • A student (graduate or undergraduate). 
  • Enrolled in any Faculty at the University of Calgary.
  • Focusing your education and research on Northern and Arctic sustainable development.

 

The Scholarship Committee looks for:

  • Applicants who best address academic excellence.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Northern research.
  • Desire for research results to be beneficial to Northerners.

Application Requirements

The following items are required for your application: 

  • Cover letter (please include an email address where we can contact you).
  • Brief description of the proposed research, or relevant educational opportunity, (2 to 3 pages), including a clear hypothesis, relevance, title and statement of the purpose of the research, the area and type of study, the methodology and plan for evaluation of findings. Any collaborative relationship or work should be briefly identified.
  • One reference letter.
  • Complete curriculum vitae.
  • Official transcripts (transcripts issued to students are acceptable).
  • A list of current sources and amounts of research funding, including scholarships, grants and bursaries.
