LGL Alaska

The University of Alaska Fairbanks has provided funds for new leadership of the U.S. Corporation of the Arctic Institute of North America (AINA).  Dr. Carl Benson, Chairman of the Board of Governors, and Emeritus Professor of Geology and Geophysics at UAF, announced the appointment of  Dr. Ken Tape as Executive Secretary.  The appointment is for about one-third time at present.

Dr. Tape is an ecologist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), Institute of Northern Engineering.  As a youth, he attended the public school system in Fairbanks, and later obtained a B. A. in Geology from Carleton College, a M. S. in Geology and a Ph. D. in Biology at UAF.  Dr. Tape has broad interests in the arctic natural sciences, including its people and history.  His research describes the impacts of 20th century climate warming on various components of the Arctic tundra ecosystem, including vegetation, permafrost, hydrology, and wildlife.  He has a book and a traveling museum exhibit called The Changing Arctic Landscape.  Dr. Tape will be working closely with AINA membership and leadership in the U.S. and Canada.

The Arctic Institute will resume its “Arctic Roundtable” series May 6th 2014 at 6:00pm at the Westmark Hotel in downtown Fairbanks to discuss “How We Value Education?” Education is an issue of widespread importance in the Arctic but determining how we assign value to it is not easy or obvious.  Dermot Cole will moderate a panel of several education experts, with questions and discussion from the audience. This will be the 16th Arctic Roundtable.
