The 1902 wreck of Scottish Arctic whaling vessel Nova Zembla was discovered on the remote coast of Baffin Island in the final hour of Dr. Matthew Ayre and Dr. Michael Moloney’s 2018 search window. Sailing in the death throes of the trade that lit and lubricated the march of the industrial revolution, the newly discovered wreck constitutes a significant find in this often-forgotten part of Canada and Britain's industrial history. A year later, in the summer of 2019, the pair returned to the wreck site with drone pilots Robert Kautuk and Alex Taylor to get a true sense of what remains from the turbulent events of 18th September 1902. This lecture will highlight the remarkable discoveries made this summer.
