Dr. Strong has academic and professional expertise in vegetation ecology and analysis, but he also has an interest in palaeoecology. As a full-time resident of Yukon since early 2007, much of his time has involved investigating the present and past development of vegetation in Yukon, recognition of a new variety of lodgepole pine and possibly a new lichen taxon, and the development of an extensive plant collection for the territory. The latter is an ongoing project that currently exceeds 9300 specimens, mostly vascular plants and lichens.
