In July 2013, Fulbright Canada awarded Dr. Muir the Fulbright Canada- RBC Award for renewable energy projects and desalination for 2014.
Dr. Muir is implementing the Fulbright research as Associate Adjunct Research Scholar with the Columbia Climate Center and Earth Institute at Columbia University in New York City; and Visiting Scholar with the Center for Carbon-free Power Integration and Mangone Center for Marine Policy in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment at the University of Delaware, being hosted on both campuses from January 2014 onwards
The research is being implemented as a Research Associate of the Arctic Institute of North America, and as an Associate Professor with Aarhus University Herning in cooperation with the Centre for Energy Technologies. The Fulbright research is also occurring in collaboration with the Sustainable Cities International Energy Lab, the United Nation Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), and the Coastal and Marine Union (EUCC).
One aspect of this Fulbright research explores the linkage between aquifer management, renewable energy and desalination for the Baja California region of Mexico. This research is being implemented in collaboration with the Centro Mario Molina, the IMPLAN Los Cabos (El Instituto Municipal de Planeación de Los Cabos), and the Sustainable Cities International Energy Lab.
This Fulbright research was initially discussed as a case study for the 2014 UN-Water Annual International Zaragoza Conference: Preparing for World Water Day 2014: Partnerships for improving water and energy access, efficiency and sustainability. The link to the case study is here and a pdf verision is found here. Another web based article was also published in conjunction with the 2014 UN-Water Conference entitled Renewable Energy and the Role of Academic and Private Partnerships for Energy and Water Nexus in Arid Regions. The weblink is found here and the pdf version is found here.
This research has also been submitted for presentation at the International Water Association (IWA) Water, Energy and Climate Conference 2014: Solutions for Future Water Security , taking place in Mexico City from May 21 to 24, 2014 in Mexico City. The submitted abstract is found here. The conference paper dated April 18, 2014 is found here. The May 23 conference presentation is found here, with the related appendix to that presentation found here. Related presentations were made for the Municipality of Los Cabos on March 24, 2014 can be found here, and for the Columbia Climate Center and Earth Institute on May 1, 2014 which can be found here. This paper and presentations used information provided by Centro Mario Molina and IMPLAN Los Cabos, and included the active participation of Andrés Aranda Martínez, Project Manager, Centro Mario Molina and Kyle Leinweber, B. Sc. (Chemical Engineering) and Engineer in Training, Equinox Engineering Ltd.. Alfonso Rivera, Adjunct Professor at at Université Laval and Université du Québec, provided advice on aquifer assessment and modelling for Baja California Sur.
Another aspect of this Fulbright research focus on the role of public and private partnerships for renewable energy and water projects, and is being implemented with Sustainable Cities International Energy Lab in cooperation with Durban, Los Cabos and Zagreb; and with the Indonesian Climate Change Trust Fund. A presentation was made on February 25, 2014 for the Sustainable Cities International Energy Lab and the member cities of Durban, Los Cabos and Zagreb, and is found here.
Further Fulbright research is occurring on the energy and water nexus, particularly in light of interface between water scarcity, energy and food security in northern Africa with UN DESA.
